Google Ads Tutorial: Breaking into the Tree Service Industry

Google Ads Campaign Case Study for the Tree Services Industry

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog!

We are a full service digital marketing agency based in eastern Kansas established in 2023. Since our beginning, we have helped several companies maintain strong standing online with optimized websites, SEO strategies, and lead generation. Our goals for 2025 include expanding the business into offering a higher-level solution for dominant lead generation strategies for small, local businesses in the Kansas City market.

Google Ads, Swinging the Bat: Step 1

The framework we are following for this campaign is based on the step-by-step guide by Aaron Young, an expert digital marketing agency in Australia. His Youtube video titled, Google Ads Tutorial for Beginners [Updated for 2025], covers the start to finish process for getting a Google Ads campaign launched for a beginner.

We set up a Search campaign so our ads showed up in the Google search results and our desired outcome was leads for our tree services client in KC. Because our client is only working from 8am-5pm, we set the ads to only show between those hours. We chose to do this to avoid internet users from "shopping around" different tree services at night when they never had any intention to call us because every click cost a lot of money at the end of the month!

The photo above shows an overview of a Google Ads campaign from one of Define Digital Academy's Youtube videos.

Aaron updated this video to include the most important strategy for Google Ads in 2025, which is to hyper-segment your ads and ad groups. What this means is to create individual ad groups and ads for each individual professional service offered by a business, so for tree services, one could break down tree removal into its own group and tree trimming into its own group. See the table below to understand the distinction.

Factors Tree Removal Tree Trimming
Length of job Requires not only repetitive and safely cutting down a tree but loading the wood into a trailer and discarding it. Can take all 5-7 Requires operator to ascend to the top and tips of tree branches to trim. Need to pick up fall tree twigs and small branches that can be composted to stored in a small container. Can take 1-2 days
Cost More expensive due to the hard manual labor and time dedicated to removing the tree. Typically less expensive and is scheduled for every other year.
Number of crew members Typically dependent on the size of the tree but ranges from 2-6. Can range from 1-2.

As can be seen by the above table, an ad group for tree removal should focus on the benefits of having an experienced professional remove the tree; it will be fast, safer, and offers peace of mind that a homeowner can move on to other things. Whereas a tree trimming ads group, well, my nephew can grab a small set of garden shears and probably trim some branches off a tree, so the ad should appeal to how a professional knows the "healthiest" way to trim trees or how often certain species of trees need to be trimmed.

The conclusion for why there should be a segmentation is seen with this example; someone wants a tree removed from a yard because they just had surgery and can't do it themselves sees a Google ad that says something along the lines of "Tree Services for Trimming, Removal, Stumps, or anything else you want done with trees! Call Us!," while, yes including the keyword "removal", advertises other services and then as a "catch all" includes a phrase saying we can do anything with trees. The strategy in 2025 has proven that these types of Google ads are ineffective because a user who has an immediate need to be filled will see that the company behind this ad does all these services and will feel that this company isn't specialized enough or is creating a spam ad.

Results from a Google Ads Campaign for Tree Services: Step 2

Our campaign has been live for a week now and we are finally getting some impressions and some clicks. Lets look at the overview of our tree removal campaign.

I have had no conversions after 5 clicks on my ad! This is very frustrating considering I have spent $25. So what do I do?

The video tutorial I followed instructed me to backtest and optimize my campaign as data started coming in about which locations were searching which keywords that lead them to click on my ad.

I have had impressions from dozens of cities in my targeted areas which is great; that means my initial setup was done correctly thanks to the tutorial video. Another useful piece of data is a distribution of how people are seeing my ads.

This shows that the only time people are clicking on my ad are when they are on their phones. Conclusions that can be drawn from this are that my ads on the desktop might look unappealing or maybe people who are on a desktop are able to see 5-8 different business listing toward the bottom of the screen whereas on a phone there might only be 2-3 different options to choose from unless they scroll down immediately. IDK!

The only thing I know is 5 people looked at my website from their phone and decided not to call me to get a quote for a tree removal service.
